Why Goals Are Not That Important

I trust you have begun 2012 in fine form.

If you’re like me, you have probably been inundated with emails, articles and other such talk about setting resolutions and goals for yourself.

I’m a huge proponent of setting and working towards meaningful goals.

But I have to admit one thing:

Goals in and of themselves are not the most important thing.

What IS important is the person you become in the process of achieving your goals.

In order to achieve more, you need to become more. What you become determines what you can achieve and realize in your life. What you become is just as important as what you do.

The real reason to set, work towards and achieve goals is your own personal growth. Growth that helps you create a better life for yourself…and have a more positive and profound impact on the people around you. Growth that helps you make a difference in your world, your community, within your circle of family and friends. Growth that is in alignment with your highest personal values and vision for your life.

Here’s the exciting thing about having a goal:

When you focus on a goal, you immediately begin improving because you have become aware of a new and exciting direction in which to take your life.

You’re already mentally and emotionally shifting in that direction.

As you think about what you would like to achieve, do, or bring into your life this coming year….think also about the type of person you will have to become in order to realize your goals.

For example, some years ago, when I set out to overcome a serious and chronic health problem – a severe case of asthma – I not only thought about the obvious goals, like reducing or eliminating the asthma attacks, or breathing more clearly, or getting off all the darn meds.

What really motivated me was picturing the kind of person I would be if I were free from asthma.

I thought about how great it would be to lose the fatigue and anxiety, to have abundant energy and confidence. To be able to participate fullbore in just about any activity I wanted to – without fear.

You may face your own health or fitness challenge. Have you set a goal and made the commitment to begin overcoming that challenge?

If so, keep in mind the transformative power of deep breathing and dynamic energy exercise

No matter what your goal is – losing weight, improving stamina, transforming stress into positive energy, becoming more flexible and open in body and mind – you can get started more quickly and easily if you put one of the Best Breathing Exercises programs to work for you.

It’s not magic, and you have to make some effort. But remember this:   “The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get by it, but what they become by it.”

How To Get Off To A Great Start to 2012

Happy New Year!

As you move into 2012, I’m sure you’ve given some thought to the changes or improvements you’d like to make in various areas.

I know I am. I’ve drafted and re-drafted and refined my list of goals for this year. And I’m already working on some stuff today to help me move towards some key goals. So I feel pretty good!

Did you know that the three areas people think about the most when it come to setting goals (according to surveys) are: relationships, health, and money. So I imagine these areas are important to you too.

My tips and programs don’t help directly with the areas of relationships or money. But I believe that improving your health and energy levels has a direct and dramatic impact on how successful you are in all areas of your life.

And those are two areas I CAN help you with!

Now, this is not a message about making resolutions. As you know (if you’ve been reading), I don’t believe in resolutions. I am, however, a huge believer in having an overall vision for your life and setting short-term to long-term goals towards that vision. I have experienced enormous benefit in my own life from setting, planning for and working towards specific goals I have set for myself.

So…I’d like to suggest that you formulate some goals pertaining to your health, energy levels and fitness.

What really resonates with you? Is it to lose weight? Is it to enjoy higher energy levels so you feel better and get more done? Is it to improve your fitness and mobility so you can play with your kids, or run in that 5K or 10K you’ve been wanting to do? Is it to fit into those old jeans?

Make sure you focus on a goal or goals that are important to YOU.

To help you, here are some areas to consider:

(1) Learning and applying basic stress management and coping techniques, including targeted visualization, deep breathing, and relaxation and stretching exercises. This helps you control your response to life’s challenges, control pain, manage stress, and achieve clear thinking and mental focus.

(2) Learning and performing on a regular basis (daily if possible) deep breathing and other dynamic exercises and techniques. This is critical to helping you gain control over your breathing, build lung power and stamina, improve the health of your digestive system and internal organs, and maximize energy.

(3) Starting, and sticking with, a rational exercise program. This helps you get into better shape, build stamina and strength, and protect you from disease. When you embark on a well-planned program, you can enjoy your workouts and favorite activities.

(4) Learn simple modifications to your diet, including some key nutritional supplements, to help improve your health and energy levels.

This year, I’ll continue to focus on these areas in these tips I send you, as well as in new programs being introduced over the course of the year. My emphasis is on making it easy (and fun!) for you to discover and leverage the power of your breath to promote better health and energy. Because, fact is, our overall health and energy is so important to success in every area of our lives.

Thank you again for reading and for being a Best Breathing Exercises “Energy, Fitness & Personal Power” newsletter subscriber. One of my favorite things to do each day is to write to you.

Here’s to your health and to an awesome 2012!

How To Prepare For the Best Year of Your Life

The first step in deciding what you want for the coming year is to think back over the past year….about the good things, as well as the not-so-good things, that came into your life.

Think also about what you did (or did not do) to achieve those good things, or to bring or allow in those not-so-good things.

We learn from our mistakes as well as our successes, so it’s good to spend a few minutes on each.

If you’re like most people, you are your own worst critic.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz, the famous founder of Psycho-Cybernetics, always said, “See yourself with kind eyes.”

(By the way, I highly recommend all of Dr. Maltz’s books. Try to find the original versions from the 1960s and 1970s. More recent versions of his works have been re-published by people who added their own stuff on top of Maltz’s. His original material is the best resource, from my point of view.)

“See yourself with kind eyes.” So basic, but so difficult to do sometimes.

So, I recommend you pretend you are speaking with your best friend when you inventory the past year. Just as you would with a friend, be honest, but…spend more time congratulating yourself on the good things – the things you achieved this past year. Spend less time on the not-so-good stuff.

And there ARE good things – no matter how challenging your year may have been. You might have to think a little bit, but they’re there.

The next step is to reflect on what you would like to achieve or bring into your life in 2012.

Now, I’m not talking about making New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are for amateurs.

I’m talking about setting meaningful, exciting goals for yourself.

Humans are inherently goal-oriented. So setting, planning for, and working toward goals is a natural, powerful mechanism for moving forward in life. Goals are critical to the process of constructive change and growth.

It’s good to have balance in your goals.

In other words, look across the major areas of your life and think about the outcomes you would like to see in each of them.

As I mentioned yesterday, some key areas to consider include:

-health and fitness;

-family and relationships;

-career or business;

-financial;

-personal development;

-spiritual development;

-contribution and service.

You can have specific goals for any and every area of your life. And one of the most, if not THE most, important area is your health.

In fact, I believe that setting a goal or goals pertaining to your health and fitness is critical to having a positive and constructive year.

Here’s why: If your health or fitness is lousy, it will negatively impact every other area of your life. Your energy levels, your confidence, your belief in your ability to set and achieve goals, are all impacted by your success in establishing and following a solid health and fitness program.

If your health and fitness levels are high, you will possess the energy, confidence, and sense of well-being that literally catapult you forward to the achievement of even your most difficult goals.

The most direct way to this inner power (that you already possess) is through your breath.

Your breath is like a super highway that drives straight to your spirit, emotions and internal energy.

That’s one reason why I place such emphasis on cultivating your breath and energy as a fundamental cornerstone of your overall health and fitness program.

And the Best Breathing Exercises programs  – can help you with this. Each one teaches you how to tap into the inner power that you usually ignore or underestimate.

So…Back to setting your goals and planning the outcomes you want to manifest in your life for 2012. Here’s a great way to begin:

Pretend it’s a year from now, and you are looking back over 2012.

What kind of year will you be reviewing? What will you feel really awesome about having achieved or completed? What will you be most excited or proud of?

Usually the first few things that pop into your mind are good candidates for your major goals for the year. Because these are the things that you really want and desire.

And strong, burning desire is the master key to unlocking your internal powers and achieving your goals.

You Can Do It!

A Pre-New Year’s Ritual I Highly Recommend

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Thank you for the Christmas and holiday wishes that you sent. I can’t respond to each one personally, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate them.

Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday – and I have many friends from other faiths who do not – I hope you still took advantage of the holiday spirit and the time off from work and enjoyed yourself.

Hopefully you are still enjoying some time off from work, and hanging out playing with your Christmas gifts…or your kids’ gifts.

My big gift this year – from my beloved partner – was a Nook e-reader.

I love to read. I love learning and exploring through the written word, coupled with my imagination. And I love my books.

I’ve reluctantly given in to the explosion of digital reading options and even publish some of my own stuff digitally. However, I wasn’t sure whether I was ready to give an e-reader a try.

Apparently my “better half” knows me better than I know myself. I love the Nook! We also added a Kindle Fire to the family mix and are having fun exploring both options.

While I will always love my books, and will continue to invest in building and benefiting from what has become a pretty extensive library…I now have a new option for building and reading and exploring. This has added another dimension to my plans for this year, in terms of my own self-development and improvement goals. It’s exciting!

Which brings me to my point for this tip….

You know, right now – before New Year’s Eve – is a great time to take stock of the past year.

Think about what went right. What went wrong. In what areas were you successful? In what areas did you make progress? In what areas did you fail, or simply not follow through, or give up?

Since you are speaking with yourself about these things, and don’t have to worry about what anyone else thinks….be honest.

Very important: Give thanks for the blessings and positive things and people in your life. Give thanks and recognize yourself for those things you did achieve, bring to conclusion, or push forward.

Equally important: gift yourself with an honest appraisal of where you are in the important areas of your life.

Look at your health and fitness. Your personal development. Your family and relationships. Your career or business. Your financial health. Your spiritual health. The larger contribution you are making in your community.

How have you done in each of these areas?

This is a ritual I follow each and every year, prior to the New Year.

It gives me a chance to assess where I am in relation to where I want to be…count my blessings….then make decisions about my priorities for the coming year and begin to plan how I will focus on these priorities.

This process – which doesn’t take that long – renews my motivation and my hopes for the future. Desire, hope and expectation are wonderful lubricants to significant, long-lasting achievement. These “friends” result naturally from having interesting, exciting and challenging goals and dreams for your life.

So think objectively and honestly about where you stand today. Are you happy and content with every aspect of your life?

Use this process as a foundation for setting goals and making plans for a successful and – above all – fun and interesting 2012.

Three Easy Steps You Can Take Now…to Help You Accomplish Your Goals in 2012

What is the most common activity of people this time of year? Other than shopping, I mean.

It’s assessing – either consciously or subconsciously – how this past year has gone.

You look back at what has happened, what you have accomplished, and what you have left undone.

If you are consciously doing this, you are actually taking stock, either in your head or on paper.

If you are unconsciously doing this, you probably are feeling either really good about life….or you have a sense of unease or disappointment that you can’t quite shake.

Of course, as part of this process, a lot of people skip over what they didn’t get done this year, and move right into thinking about the new year. That’s because the new year is fresh and full of promise. So…they make resolutions. Probably the same resolution they made a year ago. Losing weight and getting more fit is one of the most common.

But you don’t have to wait until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to set your goals. Nor do you have to wait to begin preparing yourself for beginning to work toward your goals.

Yes, there’s nothing like momentum. If you can get clear on what you want to do in 2012 now, and begin to do a few simple things to prepare yourself…you will hit the ground running on January 1st.

Even if you are a little hungover.

Well, in that spirit, here are three simple things you can begin doing now, even during the hub bub of the holidays, to improve your health and explode into the new year with momentum:

(1)Drink lots of purified or quality bottled water. At least half your bodyweight in ounces, every day. Water purifies and detoxifies your body. It helps maintain your metabolism and energy at high levels.

(2)Take a daily multi-vitamin/mineral, vitamin C, and fish oil. If there were a law passed that limited me to only three supplements, these are the three I would focus on for general health.

Vitamin C provides so many benefits, I could write a book about it. Fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. And inflammation has been implicated as a root cause or contributor to a number of different ailments and diseases, from arthritis and asthma to heart disease and Alzheimers.

(3)Do some deep breathing and/or dynamic energy exercises each day. Preferably first thing in the morning, to expand your energy and set yourself up for a productive and successful day.

Morning breathing and energy exercises are one of the cornerstones of the fitness and health principles I teach and follow.

Learning to breathe properly and developing greater vital capacity are two of the most significant steps you can take to ensure high levels of health and energy today….and years from now.

You can also do some deep breathing and light stretching in the evening. I tell you, there is no better way to relax after a tough day. Just a few minutes will have you sleeping like a baby.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-learn, fun to do series of exercises, consider one of the Secret Power of Dynamic Energy Exercise Course volumes. Or, if one of your goals for 2012 is to lose weight and get in shape, you can try the exercises and other recommendations in the “Fire Up Your Metabolism” Program.

All of these programs are available at the Best Breathing Exercises web site – check em out at http://www.bestbreathingexercises.com/productspage.html.

Like I said, these are simple things you can begin doing now. You’ll feel better, you’ll be healthier…and you will hit the ground in full gear for the New Year!

When Is Breathing More Than Just Breathing?

Most people think of breathing as merely a mechanical process involving the airways and lungs. But it is so much more than that!

The lungs are the functional organs of respiration, as they are responsible for the active function of breathing and ventilation. So we naturally focus on them when we think about our breathing.

Howver, many breathing and energy practices embrace breathing as an activity that involves the entire body.

This is true on a number of levels.

From a physical standpoint, respiratory movement extends into the extremities. Also, breathing has a significant influence on all the physiological functions of the body. Breathing can also directly influence your mental and emotional state.

Take the time to breathe deeply and gently for several cycles. It only takes a few deep, gentle breaths – in through the nose, out through the nose – to “feel” your breath moving throughout your abdominal area.

Now feel that you are breathing into your lower back. Gently, slowly, breathe into any areas of tightness from too much sitting (like I’m doing right now to relax my back).

Next, stand up and take a few deep, gentle breaths all the way down into your feet. Breathe in energy and lightness; breathe out fatigue and stress. “Feel” yourself breathing in that energy and lightness through the top of your head. Feel yourself exhaling the fatigue and stress through the soles of your feet.

If you’re game, take it one step further: “feel” yourself breathing in energy and lightness through every pore in your body, and into every body part – so you feel like you are absorbing air from all over your body, not just through your nose. As you inhale, feel the air permeate into the deepest parts of your body.

As you exhale, “feel” yourself exhaling fatigue and stress through every pore in your body. See the old, stale air move out like smoke or steam and dissipate directly into the air around you.

Each of these stages of breathing provides a slightly different feeling and effect. When you have practiced this way for some time, you will begin to truly understand that breathing is a deep physiological process, not just a mechanical process.

Couple this understanding with a few minutes of practice each day and you be blessed with greater health and energy

It’s Here Already!

It’s here already.

Thanksgiving, I mean.

Is it just me or did the year seem to fly by?

This time of year is always a great time to discuss the magic of
gratitude. Because one of the most powerful things you can do to
improve your overall health and feeling of wellbeing is to cultivate
an attitude of gratitude.

Here are some thoughts on how you and I can apply this concept to our
breathing and our health.

This is a great time of year to express appreciation for the people,
things and events in your life.

As you take stock of all the good things that have happened to, and
for, you over the past year — and yes, there were good things, no
matter how poorly your year may have gone — you feel full of
positive energy. You feel expansive and happy.

The feeling of appreciation is probably the most profound you can
have. It’s actually a lot like love – a pure form of love.

You vibrate on a higher level. You feel more in harmony with the
world. You feel your energy skyrocket and you become less
self-centered and withdrawn.

When you suffer from any kind of chronic problem, whether it’s
health related, stress related, relationship problems, you name it
— you tend to get too wrapped up in yourself and your problems.

You view your world through the patina of pain, disappointment,
or frustration brought about by your present condition. Trouble is,
this does nothing to relieve you of your condition. In fact, it
just makes it worse.

To snap out of this negative cycle, you need to “get outside
of yourself”.

What I mean is, you need to focus your thoughts and feelings
outside of yourself and your personal problems, even if just
for a few minutes or hours.

And the easiest way to do this is to express appreciation.

The holiday season provides a perfect opportunity to do that.
In fact, it’s what Thanksgiving is all about…so what are you
waiting for?

Start to look outside yourself and your present problems or
frustrations. Count your blessings, both large and small.

Doing this can help get you into a very positive and relaxed
state of mind. It cancels out the negative energy you may be
feeling due to health problems, stress at work, stress about
the holidays, and so forth.

We’re staying in town this year – for the first time in several
year. So I’m looking forward to a nice long weekend and some
relaxed time with my family. And I’m grateful that we have
this opportunity to take a mini-vacation and share this
holiday time.

This same mechanism – of feeling gratitude for your blessings,
both great and small – is used in many techniques that combine
visualization with deep breathing. These techniques are used
to improve breathing capacity, counteract breathing disorders
such as asthma symptoms or attacks – even to control pain.

The visualizations may vary, but the goals are the same: to
(1) move your attention and focus away from your ailment;
(2) make your breathing fuller and freer; and
(3) energize and relax you.

It only takes a few minutes of thinking gracious thoughts to
begin to relax and free your breathing. ‘Tis the season —
take advantage and try it!

You Can Do It!

Reduce Stress With Big Picture Thinking

What kind of approach do you take when it comes to stress in your
life?

Modern life comes with a lot more complexity, including a faster
rate of change and a more intertwined social and economic fabric
across the globe.

Not to mention, people feel like they are working harder and doing
more, with fewer resources. And this is no longer the exception. It
has become the standard in the corporate world.

Yes, increased complexity and demands can cause you to feel out of
control and even powerless when it comes to certain areas of your
life.

But I don’t think it has to be that way.

For one thing, you can take a look at your perception of these
changes and demands in your life.

You can also consider how you respond to them.

When you take a step back, are the things that you find most
stressful really such a huge deal in the big scheme of things?

And even for the stuff that is or seems important, are you reacting
too negatively to it? Versus seeing it as a game, and responding
to the challenge.

When it comes to what really matters in life, one of the most
helpful things you can do is to look at the big picture.

First, take a step back. Literally. Give yourself a little time
and space to think about this, and tap into your inner wisdom and
intuition.

Take a minute or so to focus on your breathing. Gradually lengthen
the cycles of your breathing. Calm down. Chill for a moment.

Notice how your feelings change, and how the built up tension in
your body begins to dissipate.

One of the side benefits to breathing consciously, in this way,
is that it forces you to “be in the moment”, at least for a few
minutes or so.

You stop thinking about what happened in the past, and you stop
fretting about what may happen in the future, or what you need to
get done by x hour or date.

You simply are.

Now, introduce into this the “Big Picture”. What is the big
picture of your life? What truly matters?

For an unfortunate, nevertheless inspiring, example of doing just
this, consider the people here in Central Texas who have had to
flee from their homes because of the crazy wildfires we have been
enduring.

As I noted in yesterday’s tip, over 1,600 homes have been destroyed
in our area. Thousands of families have been displaced. Most have
lost everything.

Despite this calamity, to a person, the people who have been
interviewed by news crews – even those who had been notified that
their homes had been lost – expressed tremendous gratitude that they
and their families had made it out without harm.

And they also expressed appreciation for the firefighters and other
first responders who have been valiantly battling the blazes.

Talk about focusing on the big picture.

At this moment, in the midst of their own personal and family
tragedy, the most important thing to them is that they are OK. They
are alive, they are healthy. And they will rebuild.

Hopefully, you and I won’t ever suffer such an acutely tragic event
in our own lives. But we can still be inspired by the attitude of
these people.

For example, consider a problem, stressor or irritation you are
currently grappling with. Think about whether this will even register
in your brain or in your life a month from now…or a year from now…or
five years from now.

If you do this honestly and objectively, you’ll soon find that most
of the stressors in your life are things that you won’t even remember
or think about a few months from now.

Let alone five years from now.

So erase these from your stress list. Promise  yourself that you will
no longer stress – or at least limit your stressing – about these
challenges.

Now you have a considerably smaller list of things that, hopefully,
are far more critical to what matters most: your health, your family
and friends, your ability to make a contribution, and your ability to
achieve satisfaction and happiness in your life.

So give yourself the luxury of a moment and a few deep breaths once
in awhile.

Use your breathing to get yourself into “Big Picture” mode as often as
you can, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

With time, you’ll find “Big Picture” thinking leaves you a lot less
stressed and irritated over the small stuff…and helps you focus on
and complete a lot more of the important stuff more easily and
effortlessly.

You Can Do It!

Put Yourself in Time Out

That’s right. I’m not talking about that staple of parenting:
putting your kids into Time Out.

I’m telling you to put yourself into Time Out.

But first, let’s talk about your state.

What state are you currently in? Not where you live. How do you
feel?

Right now, I feel pretty good – BUT – mildy irritated. A call that
was supposed to start at 2pm was moved – after the 2pm start time,
mind you – to 2:30pm. Now I just got an email that it may be
moved again.

To top it off, it’s not a call I typically enjoy. So having to
accommodate to the change in schedule is even less appealing.

Hey, I got things to do and places to be! I had my afternoon all
mapped out in terms of what I wanted to work on – including this
email to you. And now I have to “recalculate”, as my GPS system
sometimes tells me when I am driving.

Most of the time, you are either in a positive state or a negative
state. There’s rarely any neutral time in your life. Unfotunately,
many people report being in a negative state the majority of the
time.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the stress and pressure of your
day. You may start the day with great plans and positive
expectations. But invariably “stuff” pops up that takes you out
of that “constructive” mindset.

That “stuff” may derail your plans for the day. So you planned on
eating a healthy lunch. But that noon meeting was scheduled at
the last minute. So you grabbed something quick or – worse yet –
ate something out of the vending machine. (Been there, done that!)

Or you planned on working out after work. But the babysitter is
sick, so you have to be home with the kids.

It’s easy to get frustrated when these things happen. It’s hard
enough sticking to a nutrition plan, or an exercise program, as
it is. When life throws in all of these extra obstacles, it can
make achieving your goals seem quite daunting, if not impossible.

Well, I don’t have the magic answer that will make all those
obstacles, energy depleters and time wasters go away.

But I do have a suggestion for how you can “take back” most or
all of your energy and focus.

The quickest, easiest way is to take a Time Out – yes, put
yourself in Time Out – and practice a few minutes of deep
breathing.

Doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just sit (or stand) and
gradually slow and deepen your breathing.

At the same time, focus your thoughts internally, on how you are
feeling.

You can actually breathe into the stress and tension by breathing
into the tight spots in your body.

As you breathe into these tight spots, imagine that every breath
is chipping away or unlocking them, piece by piece. Every
inhalation is surrounding them. Every exhalation is releasing
them or carrying pieces of them away.

Just a few minutes of this type of breathing and visualization
will naturally relax you. It will help you focus more positively
and constructively on what is really important in life.

And it can help short circuit any destructive behaviors. Like
eating a candy bar instead of something more healthy because
you’re stressed out. Or yelling at the kids because you’re cranky
because you missed your workout. Or letting you blood pressure
and heart rate elevate because you choose to be angry and
frustrated.

Again, this is no panacea. And it’s not always going to work
100 percent of the time.

But it’s a lot more pleasurable than the alternatives. And it
helps you assert control over your life and your behavior in a
very powerful and intelligent way.

You Can Do It!
