How To Get Off To A Great Start to 2012

Happy New Year!

As you move into 2012, I’m sure you’ve given some thought to the changes or improvements you’d like to make in various areas.

I know I am. I’ve drafted and re-drafted and refined my list of goals for this year. And I’m already working on some stuff today to help me move towards some key goals. So I feel pretty good!

Did you know that the three areas people think about the most when it come to setting goals (according to surveys) are: relationships, health, and money. So I imagine these areas are important to you too.

My tips and programs don’t help directly with the areas of relationships or money. But I believe that improving your health and energy levels has a direct and dramatic impact on how successful you are in all areas of your life.

And those are two areas I CAN help you with!

Now, this is not a message about making resolutions. As you know (if you’ve been reading), I don’t believe in resolutions. I am, however, a huge believer in having an overall vision for your life and setting short-term to long-term goals towards that vision. I have experienced enormous benefit in my own life from setting, planning for and working towards specific goals I have set for myself.

So…I’d like to suggest that you formulate some goals pertaining to your health, energy levels and fitness.

What really resonates with you? Is it to lose weight? Is it to enjoy higher energy levels so you feel better and get more done? Is it to improve your fitness and mobility so you can play with your kids, or run in that 5K or 10K you’ve been wanting to do? Is it to fit into those old jeans?

Make sure you focus on a goal or goals that are important to YOU.

To help you, here are some areas to consider:

(1) Learning and applying basic stress management and coping techniques, including targeted visualization, deep breathing, and relaxation and stretching exercises. This helps you control your response to life’s challenges, control pain, manage stress, and achieve clear thinking and mental focus.

(2) Learning and performing on a regular basis (daily if possible) deep breathing and other dynamic exercises and techniques. This is critical to helping you gain control over your breathing, build lung power and stamina, improve the health of your digestive system and internal organs, and maximize energy.

(3) Starting, and sticking with, a rational exercise program. This helps you get into better shape, build stamina and strength, and protect you from disease. When you embark on a well-planned program, you can enjoy your workouts and favorite activities.

(4) Learn simple modifications to your diet, including some key nutritional supplements, to help improve your health and energy levels.

This year, I’ll continue to focus on these areas in these tips I send you, as well as in new programs being introduced over the course of the year. My emphasis is on making it easy (and fun!) for you to discover and leverage the power of your breath to promote better health and energy. Because, fact is, our overall health and energy is so important to success in every area of our lives.

Thank you again for reading and for being a Best Breathing Exercises “Energy, Fitness & Personal Power” newsletter subscriber. One of my favorite things to do each day is to write to you.

Here’s to your health and to an awesome 2012!

You Can Do It!

How To Prepare For the Best Year of Your Life

The first step in deciding what you want for the coming year is to think back over the past year….about the good things, as well as the not-so-good things, that came into your life.

Think also about what you did (or did not do) to achieve those good things, or to bring or allow in those not-so-good things.

We learn from our mistakes as well as our successes, so it’s good to spend a few minutes on each.

If you’re like most people, you are your own worst critic.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz, the famous founder of Psycho-Cybernetics, always said, “See yourself with kind eyes.”

(By the way, I highly recommend all of Dr. Maltz’s books. Try to find the original versions from the 1960s and 1970s. More recent versions of his works have been re-published by people who added their own stuff on top of Maltz’s. His original material is the best resource, from my point of view.)

“See yourself with kind eyes.” So basic, but so difficult to do sometimes.

So, I recommend you pretend you are speaking with your best friend when you inventory the past year. Just as you would with a friend, be honest, but…spend more time congratulating yourself on the good things – the things you achieved this past year. Spend less time on the not-so-good stuff.

And there ARE good things – no matter how challenging your year may have been. You might have to think a little bit, but they’re there.

The next step is to reflect on what you would like to achieve or bring into your life in 2012.

Now, I’m not talking about making New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are for amateurs.

I’m talking about setting meaningful, exciting goals for yourself.

Humans are inherently goal-oriented. So setting, planning for, and working toward goals is a natural, powerful mechanism for moving forward in life. Goals are critical to the process of constructive change and growth.

It’s good to have balance in your goals.

In other words, look across the major areas of your life and think about the outcomes you would like to see in each of them.

As I mentioned yesterday, some key areas to consider include:

-health and fitness;

-family and relationships;

-career or business;

-financial;

-personal development;

-spiritual development;

-contribution and service.

You can have specific goals for any and every area of your life. And one of the most, if not THE most, important area is your health.

In fact, I believe that setting a goal or goals pertaining to your health and fitness is critical to having a positive and constructive year.

Here’s why: If your health or fitness is lousy, it will negatively impact every other area of your life. Your energy levels, your confidence, your belief in your ability to set and achieve goals, are all impacted by your success in establishing and following a solid health and fitness program.

If your health and fitness levels are high, you will possess the energy, confidence, and sense of well-being that literally catapult you forward to the achievement of even your most difficult goals.

The most direct way to this inner power (that you already possess) is through your breath.

Your breath is like a super highway that drives straight to your spirit, emotions and internal energy.

That’s one reason why I place such emphasis on cultivating your breath and energy as a fundamental cornerstone of your overall health and fitness program.

And the Best Breathing Exercises programs  – can help you with this. Each one teaches you how to tap into the inner power that you usually ignore or underestimate.

So…Back to setting your goals and planning the outcomes you want to manifest in your life for 2012. Here’s a great way to begin:

Pretend it’s a year from now, and you are looking back over 2012.

What kind of year will you be reviewing? What will you feel really awesome about having achieved or completed? What will you be most excited or proud of?

Usually the first few things that pop into your mind are good candidates for your major goals for the year. Because these are the things that you really want and desire.

And strong, burning desire is the master key to unlocking your internal powers and achieving your goals.

You Can Do It!

A Pre-New Year’s Ritual I Highly Recommend

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Thank you for the Christmas and holiday wishes that you sent. I can’t respond to each one personally, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate them.

Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday – and I have many friends from other faiths who do not – I hope you still took advantage of the holiday spirit and the time off from work and enjoyed yourself.

Hopefully you are still enjoying some time off from work, and hanging out playing with your Christmas gifts…or your kids’ gifts.

My big gift this year – from my beloved partner – was a Nook e-reader.

I love to read. I love learning and exploring through the written word, coupled with my imagination. And I love my books.

I’ve reluctantly given in to the explosion of digital reading options and even publish some of my own stuff digitally. However, I wasn’t sure whether I was ready to give an e-reader a try.

Apparently my “better half” knows me better than I know myself. I love the Nook! We also added a Kindle Fire to the family mix and are having fun exploring both options.

While I will always love my books, and will continue to invest in building and benefiting from what has become a pretty extensive library…I now have a new option for building and reading and exploring. This has added another dimension to my plans for this year, in terms of my own self-development and improvement goals. It’s exciting!

Which brings me to my point for this tip….

You know, right now – before New Year’s Eve – is a great time to take stock of the past year.

Think about what went right. What went wrong. In what areas were you successful? In what areas did you make progress? In what areas did you fail, or simply not follow through, or give up?

Since you are speaking with yourself about these things, and don’t have to worry about what anyone else thinks….be honest.

Very important: Give thanks for the blessings and positive things and people in your life. Give thanks and recognize yourself for those things you did achieve, bring to conclusion, or push forward.

Equally important: gift yourself with an honest appraisal of where you are in the important areas of your life.

Look at your health and fitness. Your personal development. Your family and relationships. Your career or business. Your financial health. Your spiritual health. The larger contribution you are making in your community.

How have you done in each of these areas?

This is a ritual I follow each and every year, prior to the New Year.

It gives me a chance to assess where I am in relation to where I want to be…count my blessings….then make decisions about my priorities for the coming year and begin to plan how I will focus on these priorities.

This process – which doesn’t take that long – renews my motivation and my hopes for the future. Desire, hope and expectation are wonderful lubricants to significant, long-lasting achievement. These “friends” result naturally from having interesting, exciting and challenging goals and dreams for your life.

So think objectively and honestly about where you stand today. Are you happy and content with every aspect of your life?

Use this process as a foundation for setting goals and making plans for a successful and – above all – fun and interesting 2012.

You Can Do It!

This Is Better Than Aerobics

Warning: before you kick off your New Year’s resolution to work out and get in better shape, please read this message. It could save you a lot of time, wasted energy and frustration.

Did you know that your lung capacity is the best predictor of how long you will live?

A number of studies, including the very highly regarded Framingham Heart Study (which has been going on for over 50 years), have found that lung capacity is the best predictor of longevity.

The bigger your lungs, the more air they can process, the longer you live. Unfortunately, once you hit your 30s, your lung capacity begins to decline. In fact, depending on how active you remain, by the time you hit 70 you’ll lose about 50 percent of your lung capacity.

In order to improve and preserve lung capacity, you’ve got to build up a reserve of capacity.

You may think this means jumping into an aerobic exercise program.

No!

Aerobic exercise to a certain point is OK. But unless you are a marathon runner, there is no need to do that much aerobic exercising.

You will make a superior investment of time if you focus on your breathing exercises; perform shorter, more intense interval training two to three times per week; and include two brief, well-rounded strength training sessions per week.

In fact, you can even program your strength training so that it provides strength and lean muscle building effects while also giving you the cardiovascular work you need to improve lung capacity.

The truth is, aerobics can actually decrease lung size. Sure, your lungs may become more efficient. But their overall capacity declines.

On the other hand, focusing directly on your breathing – as with the exercises in the Secret Power of Dynamic Energy Exercise Course, Volume II: The Dynamic Energy Routine is the surest way to build lung capacity.

These exercises tone and strengthen the muscles and structures that support healthy, proper breathing. Proper breathing can also  lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and help you burn more calories.

Bottom line: you don’t have to subject yourself to long, boring bouts of “cardio” or aerobic exercise.

Whether you’re overweight and need to lose some L-B’s….or you are trying to gain weight and are having trouble putting on lean mass….a solid program of deep breathing, intervals and well-rounded resistance training is the way to go for optimal results.

You Can Do It!

Three Easy Steps You Can Take Now…to Help You Accomplish Your Goals in 2012

What is the most common activity of people this time of year? Other than shopping, I mean.

It’s assessing – either consciously or subconsciously – how this past year has gone.

You look back at what has happened, what you have accomplished, and what you have left undone.

If you are consciously doing this, you are actually taking stock, either in your head or on paper.

If you are unconsciously doing this, you probably are feeling either really good about life….or you have a sense of unease or disappointment that you can’t quite shake.

Of course, as part of this process, a lot of people skip over what they didn’t get done this year, and move right into thinking about the new year. That’s because the new year is fresh and full of promise. So…they make resolutions. Probably the same resolution they made a year ago. Losing weight and getting more fit is one of the most common.

But you don’t have to wait until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to set your goals. Nor do you have to wait to begin preparing yourself for beginning to work toward your goals.

Yes, there’s nothing like momentum. If you can get clear on what you want to do in 2012 now, and begin to do a few simple things to prepare yourself…you will hit the ground running on January 1st.

Even if you are a little hungover.

Well, in that spirit, here are three simple things you can begin doing now, even during the hub bub of the holidays, to improve your health and explode into the new year with momentum:

(1)Drink lots of purified or quality bottled water. At least half your bodyweight in ounces, every day. Water purifies and detoxifies your body. It helps maintain your metabolism and energy at high levels.

(2)Take a daily multi-vitamin/mineral, vitamin C, and fish oil. If there were a law passed that limited me to only three supplements, these are the three I would focus on for general health.

Vitamin C provides so many benefits, I could write a book about it. Fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. And inflammation has been implicated as a root cause or contributor to a number of different ailments and diseases, from arthritis and asthma to heart disease and Alzheimers.

(3)Do some deep breathing and/or dynamic energy exercises each day. Preferably first thing in the morning, to expand your energy and set yourself up for a productive and successful day.

Morning breathing and energy exercises are one of the cornerstones of the fitness and health principles I teach and follow.

Learning to breathe properly and developing greater vital capacity are two of the most significant steps you can take to ensure high levels of health and energy today….and years from now.

You can also do some deep breathing and light stretching in the evening. I tell you, there is no better way to relax after a tough day. Just a few minutes will have you sleeping like a baby.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-learn, fun to do series of exercises, consider one of the Secret Power of Dynamic Energy Exercise Course volumes. Or, if one of your goals for 2012 is to lose weight and get in shape, you can try the exercises and other recommendations in the “Fire Up Your Metabolism” Program.

All of these programs are available at the Best Breathing Exercises web site – check em out at http://www.bestbreathingexercises.com/productspage.html.

Like I said, these are simple things you can begin doing now. You’ll feel better, you’ll be healthier…and you will hit the ground in full gear for the New Year!

When Is Breathing More Than Just Breathing?

Most people think of breathing as merely a mechanical process involving the airways and lungs. But it is so much more than that!

The lungs are the functional organs of respiration, as they are responsible for the active function of breathing and ventilation. So we naturally focus on them when we think about our breathing.

Howver, many breathing and energy practices embrace breathing as an activity that involves the entire body.

This is true on a number of levels.

From a physical standpoint, respiratory movement extends into the extremities. Also, breathing has a significant influence on all the physiological functions of the body. Breathing can also directly influence your mental and emotional state.

Take the time to breathe deeply and gently for several cycles. It only takes a few deep, gentle breaths – in through the nose, out through the nose – to “feel” your breath moving throughout your abdominal area.

Now feel that you are breathing into your lower back. Gently, slowly, breathe into any areas of tightness from too much sitting (like I’m doing right now to relax my back).

Next, stand up and take a few deep, gentle breaths all the way down into your feet. Breathe in energy and lightness; breathe out fatigue and stress. “Feel” yourself breathing in that energy and lightness through the top of your head. Feel yourself exhaling the fatigue and stress through the soles of your feet.

If you’re game, take it one step further: “feel” yourself breathing in energy and lightness through every pore in your body, and into every body part – so you feel like you are absorbing air from all over your body, not just through your nose. As you inhale, feel the air permeate into the deepest parts of your body.

As you exhale, “feel” yourself exhaling fatigue and stress through every pore in your body. See the old, stale air move out like smoke or steam and dissipate directly into the air around you.

Each of these stages of breathing provides a slightly different feeling and effect. When you have practiced this way for some time, you will begin to truly understand that breathing is a deep physiological process, not just a mechanical process.

Couple this understanding with a few minutes of practice each day and you be blessed with greater health and energy

It’s Here Already!

It’s here already.

Thanksgiving, I mean.

Is it just me or did the year seem to fly by?

This time of year is always a great time to discuss the magic of
gratitude. Because one of the most powerful things you can do to
improve your overall health and feeling of wellbeing is to cultivate
an attitude of gratitude.

Here are some thoughts on how you and I can apply this concept to our
breathing and our health.

This is a great time of year to express appreciation for the people,
things and events in your life.

As you take stock of all the good things that have happened to, and
for, you over the past year — and yes, there were good things, no
matter how poorly your year may have gone — you feel full of
positive energy. You feel expansive and happy.

The feeling of appreciation is probably the most profound you can
have. It’s actually a lot like love – a pure form of love.

You vibrate on a higher level. You feel more in harmony with the
world. You feel your energy skyrocket and you become less
self-centered and withdrawn.

When you suffer from any kind of chronic problem, whether it’s
health related, stress related, relationship problems, you name it
— you tend to get too wrapped up in yourself and your problems.

You view your world through the patina of pain, disappointment,
or frustration brought about by your present condition. Trouble is,
this does nothing to relieve you of your condition. In fact, it
just makes it worse.

To snap out of this negative cycle, you need to “get outside
of yourself”.

What I mean is, you need to focus your thoughts and feelings
outside of yourself and your personal problems, even if just
for a few minutes or hours.

And the easiest way to do this is to express appreciation.

The holiday season provides a perfect opportunity to do that.
In fact, it’s what Thanksgiving is all about…so what are you
waiting for?

Start to look outside yourself and your present problems or
frustrations. Count your blessings, both large and small.

Doing this can help get you into a very positive and relaxed
state of mind. It cancels out the negative energy you may be
feeling due to health problems, stress at work, stress about
the holidays, and so forth.

We’re staying in town this year – for the first time in several
year. So I’m looking forward to a nice long weekend and some
relaxed time with my family. And I’m grateful that we have
this opportunity to take a mini-vacation and share this
holiday time.

This same mechanism – of feeling gratitude for your blessings,
both great and small – is used in many techniques that combine
visualization with deep breathing. These techniques are used
to improve breathing capacity, counteract breathing disorders
such as asthma symptoms or attacks – even to control pain.

The visualizations may vary, but the goals are the same: to
(1) move your attention and focus away from your ailment;
(2) make your breathing fuller and freer; and
(3) energize and relax you.

It only takes a few minutes of thinking gracious thoughts to
begin to relax and free your breathing. ‘Tis the season —
take advantage and try it!

You Can Do It!

Staying Younger Ain’t So Hard

In your previous tip, I discussed the importance of muscle mass in
determining your longevity and quality of life.

If you have good muscle mass, it’s an indication of a healthy
metabolism and enhanced anabolic capabilities to build up your body,
better handle stress, and rapidly and efficiently repair and rebuild
tissue – which means slower aging.

Building up your body’s anabolic capabilities and building up your
strength – through deep breathing, proper exercise, good nutrition,
and adequate rest – is one of the two major factors you control.

The other factor is mental: staying curious, always learning and
doing new things, and being enthusiastic. In other words, keeping
your inner child awake and alive, rather than buried under adult
pressures and responsibilities.

Recently, some amazing studies have been done which shed even
more light on the exercise and aging equation. These studies
indicate that it doesn’t take much, in terms of time or effort,
to slow the aging process and extend your life.

As an example, in 2009, the American College of Medicine and the
American Heart Association conducted a study on the relationship
between a walking-based exercise program and life expectancy.

Subjects who engaged in a program of moderate walking (30 minutes
a day, five days a week) found their risk of death decreased by
27 percent. In addition, the study found a significant reduction
in deaths from heart disease, as well as a somewhat lower
reduction in deaths from cancer.

Here’s another one for you: the famous Framingham Heart Study,
which has been in progress since 1948, tracked a group of adults
over decades to try to identify the common factors associated with
cardiovascular disease.

Among their findings was a distinct correlation between decreased
respiratory capacity and increased mortality.

In other words, if you stop moving, stop pushing yourself, stop
enhancing your breathing abilities and capacity…you can expect
to age quicker. AND you’ll be more likely to succumb to heart
disease or the other dis-eases of our time which are tied so
closely to lifestyle factors.

So….what does this mean to you?

Well, from my point of view, it’s pretty simple. Starting (or
maintaining) a well-rounded exercise program is one of the
smartest things you can do, if you are interested in living
longer AND having more life in those years.

Aerobic exercise is important for your heart and breathing
capacity. Resistance exercise is important for building muscle
mass and healthy bones that resist osteoporosis. Alternating
these two types of exercise on a daily basis is a great way to
fit exercise into your routine while providing some variety in
your training.

JUst as importantly: Breathing coupled with specific types of
movement and stretching is ideal for quickly and enjoyably
increasing your lung power and vital capacity, as well your
resistance to stress.

Greater lung power and capacity equals health and longevity!

This is one of the reasons I emphasize breathing and energy
exercises in my own health and fitness regimen, and recommend
it so heartily to you.

It’s an approach that is time-tested and proven.

In both Eastern and Western traditions, breathing in tandem
with specific types of exercise were considered a sure path to
enhanced health, wellness, and personal power. The Indians
and Chinese were to on this centuries ago. As were the ancient
Greeks.

To them, exercise was a tool used to harness even greater
potential than simply physical skills and benefits. If designed
properly, it can also be used to integrate your mind, body and
spirit, resulting in enhanced physical capabilities and health,
as well as a greater ability to focus on and enjoy your work
and your daily life.

You Can Do It!

“Beat the Heat”

Whew! What a furnace out there!

Here in Central Texas we have had a long, hot, brutal summer.

A severe drought has evaporated our beautiful lake into a small
river. I think we’re on day 67 (or some ridiculously high number)
of 100-plus degree days. As in 107, 108, 109 as our daily highs.

To top it off, everyone I know is having major allergy problems.
Seems the air is so hot and dry that any little thing like molds
or pollen that may be out there is causing even more problems
than usual.

Many hardy souls – including yours truly – continue to soldier on
through the heat. We are determined to go to the park and play
with our kids outside. We continue to do our daily runs and walks.

But – we are also trying to be smart about it.

For me, this means playing or exercising outdoors has to occur in
the morning. Afternoon and evenings are just too tough.

It also means that anyone spending any amount of time outside needs
to be realistic about the intensity and duration of their workouts.
Shorter and less intense is mandatory to avoid heat exhaustion.

To “beat the heat” (which is a bunch of BS really, you can’t
actually beat the heat, you have to accommodate it), you should
ensure you are adequately hydrated. Drink water, juices, decaf
teas, etc., all day long.

Here’s the other substance you should pay attention to: salt.

Salt consumption is surrounded by controversy and differing
opinions within the health and medical industries.

It’s well-known that over-consumption of salt can lead to high
blood pressure and increased chances of heart disease. Problem
is, most of the research on salt has been done on refined salt,
not on natural, unprocessed sea salt.

I think salt gets a bad rap.

Besides improving the taste of your food, here are just a few of
the things salt does for you:

-Aids in balancing blood sugar

-Aids in preventing muscle cramps

-Clears the lungs of mucus plugs and phlegm

-It’s a strong anti-histamine

-It helps maintain the structure of your bones.

Of course, if you eat a lot of processed foods, or salt your foods
with regular table salt, then you need to watch your consumption.
Regular salt has chemicals such as aluminum and acetate added
during the refining process.

I highly recommend you switch to a natural sea salt, such as
Celtic Sea Salt. Trader Joe’s also sells a good natural product.
Natural sea salts are dried in the sun and retain the iodine
content from the sea (versus refined salt, where the iodine has
to be added back in). Sea salt also contains many trace minerals
that are beneficial to your body.

In hot weather, you should (of course!) drink a lot more filtered
water throughout the day, even if you’re not that thirsty. Stay
ahead of your thirst. If you are thirsty, you are already
dehydrated. The heat causes you to sweat more, whether you
exercise or not. And you lose a lot of minerals through sweating.

Try adding a pinch of sea salt to your water. It will help
replenish and refresh you better than water alone. It can also
help restore your energy levels, especially if you have been
exercising.

You know, there are a lot of foods that get a bad rap…that
conventional “wisdom” says are bad for you. (I hammer on some of
these misconceptions about food and dieting in the “Fire Up Your
Metabolism” Program
.)

We have all been mislead and sold a bill of goods when it comes
to eating in a way that supports our health, wellbeing and energy
levels.

The truth is, you don’t have to deprive yourself and feel lousy
all the time to boost your body’s natural fat burning, muscle
building mechanisms.

Imagine that: you can actually eat “real food”, enjoy yourself,
and feel and look great.

But I digress…

So, get out there and work out, even in this heat. Just be sure
to time your workout during the morning or late evening hours;
pace yourself while exercising; drink lots of water; and add a
little extra salt to your food.

You Can Do It!
